Rope/Confined Space Excercise
Moosic - April 11, 2010
Crews from Avoca, Duryea, Greenwood, Old Forge and Taylor would get together Sunday morning to complete several technical rescue excercises. With the weather cooperating, crews would be tasked with completing some rope work as well as two confined space entries.

Crews from Greenwood & Duryea would work together on the confined space scenario based in the Cinemark parking lot. Crews would need to make entry into the 28' drainage basin, secure a victim, then use a search camera to search along the connected drain pipe to ensure all victims were located. Chief Molinaro would have overall command of the excerise, while receiving assistance with operations, safety and accoutability from officers from each participating department.

Crews from Avoca, Old Forge and Taylor would team up to tackle the confined space entry located at the bottom of a steep ravine. Haul and rappel lines would be setup to assist crews in getting personnel and equipment down to the incident location. All of the necessary equipment for air monitoring, tri pod, supplied air, escape packs, harnesses and pumps would have to reach the entry location. Several trips up and down the embankment would be needed before all the necessary supplies were gathered. Then the entry teams, under the supervision of Asst Chief Matthews, would need to build the tripod, complete the required air monitoring, pump water from the basin and setup their air supply. Entry was then made using a rope system to raise and lower the entry attendants. A rescue team was kept at the ready throughout the excercise.

Once the entry was successfully completed, the crew then needed to de-construct all the equipment and re-pack it for the trip back up the embankment. Several trips with the haul line would be required to get all equipment and personnel back to the topside staging area. In all, the excercises would take a little more than three hours from start to finish.

The participating departments are already working on the next training excercise, which should occur in the near future.
